🥎Savage Varsity Fastpitch traveled to Stigler on Tuesday for a matchup against the talented Panthers and their ace pitcher, Cambry Cook. The Savages came out swinging against Cook, racking up eleven hits in the contest, but a string of stranded base runners and uncharacteristic fielding errors ultimately led to a 5-4 defeat in eight innings.
Sophomore Mylee Williams, who continued her hot streak with three hits in the game, drove in the game’s first run in the top of the third inning, scoring courtesy runner Raylee Martin from third base. Martin ran for pitcher Mailayah Carney who had reached on a three-base error earlier in the inning.
Stigler tied the game at one run each in the bottom of the third inning and then added one run in each of the next two innings to open a 3-1 lead after five innings of play. The Savages came storming back in the top of the sixth inning after freshman Adelyn French entered the game and led off the inning with a single. Senior Jaxie Glasson followed with another single, setting the table for freshman Khloe Williams, who lined a triple into centerfield to drive in both runners, and then promptly scored on a passed ball to retake the lead at 4-3.
The Savages maintained that one run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but a costly fielding error put a runner on second base and the Panthers successfully moved her around the bases to tie the game 4-4 at the end of regulation play. Cook kept the Savages off base in the top of the 8th inning and then, with a full count and two outs in the bottom of the 8th, the Panthers claimed the dramatic win with a home run to end the game.
The Savages will compete in the Broken Arrow Festival this weekend. Follow the Broken Bow Schools social media feeds for more information on game times and opponents.
